The following is the letter I just sent to my senators and U.S. representative. I wish the language were more concise and incisive, precise. Some days are diamonds and some days are stones and so, this is the qualitative okay that I managed, with apologies to the better than okay that did not.
This was sent to Todd Young and Jim Banks, senators for Indiana, and Jefferson Shreve, U.S. representative for my district.
If you want to contact your own representatives, you can check Congress.gov here.
So, here’s the Dear Senator part:
Dear Senator,
I am writing a brief message to express my concern about the instability of the government and the economy. The president has expressed interest in occupying Greenland, Venezuela, Canada, Iceland, Mexico, and Cuba. He has been erratic in his statements and behavior and has damaged our relations with all our allies, diplomatically and financially. His confusing and contradictory statements on tariffs and occupation have destabilized the stock market and other countries have threatened to sell off their U.S. bonds and there seems to be a very real danger that the U.S. dollar will cease to be the globally preferred stable currency. It will take years to repair the damage from our government’s inconsistency and it may well take decades. The failure of the U.S. Congress, and you, as a Senator, to exercise your constitutional duties regarding oversight of the executive branch is contributing to all of this and I’m seriously questioning what it will take for you and your colleagues to do something, anything at all, to calm and repair the situation.
Additionally, the president has indicated that he may work to affect the elections, making them less free, fair, and democratic. In his creation and exercise of DOGE earlier in 2025, he has compromised the social security numbers of every American. In his deployment of ICE, he is currently and blatantly violating the civil rights of Americans and detaining U.S. citizens in contradiction to our guaranteed rights of habeas corpus (Article I) and against illegal search and seizure (Fourth Amendment). He is actively threatening to remove our Fourteenth Amendment rights of birthright citizenship. His control of the FCC and his endless tweets and Truth Social posts are creating conditions that threaten our rights to free press and free speech. If our rights aren’t being protected by you and our government, then aren’t you failing in your most fundamental duty?
I would argue that the Executive Branch has also been violating the Hatch Act. I would argue that the U.S. is potentially committing war crimes (invading and pillaging Venezuela for example) and definitely committing vast human rights violations in its actions against Venezuelan boats, Indigenous American people, undocumented residents, and in its continued, injudicious support of the Israeli government as it continues to annex land and starve, injure, kill, and destroy Palestinians. And here again, you as a Senator have not yet performed your role in the American system of checks and balances.
I am respectfully asking you to attend to two of the most basic jobs you were elected to do. Exercise meaningful oversight of the Executive Branch and protect your constituents’ Constitutional and human rights.
Respectfully,
